For nature lovers, legend has it that the Greek gods played chess in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains, which is home to the Walia ibex, Simien fox, and Gelada baboon -- all endemic to Ethiopia -- plus myriad other animals and birds. In fact, Ethiopia’s wildlife includes seven endemic mammals, virtually all the big games common in East Africa, and more than 850 bird species, of which 16 are found only in Ethiopia. The 20 million year-old northern lakes of Ethiopia’s Rift Valley, less than a day’s drive from Addis Ababa, offer not magnificent views of volcanic topography and animal sightings, combined with a variety of water sports and other resort activities.
